(David S. Bodie)

14th South Carolina Infantry, Co “B”, Killed Petersburg April 2, 1865 (A bad day to be in Petersburg, the last day of the siege) This is the son of Felix Boddie. An account of his death from Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight by ; John Bennett Boddie…..

Dr. William G. Boddie of Aiken SC, writes that as a child he remembers an old soldier who belonged to the same company as his Uncle Davis, tell of his uncle’s death many times. Dr. Bodie says, “He stated that my uncle was an expert rifle shot, that at the time he was killed they were being charged by Federal Battalions, that he himself had been wounded and in company with half a dozen other wounded men, was lying in the bottom of the trench loading rifles for my uncle Davis, who sat upon the breastworks firing rifles as rapidly as they could pass them up to him. He said the guns were so hot they could scarcely hold them for loading and that every time my uncle fired a soldier went down. This old soldier said that he must have hit twenty-five or thirty of them before he (my uncle) was struck. Finally, however a rifle bullet struck him in the throat and he fell back into the trench on top of them. He says he propped my uncle up and gave him a drink of water, but he could not stay with him until he died as the Federals finally captured this trench and they had to retreat to avoid capture. My family never heard any more from him of course, and he his buried in an unknown grave at Petersburg.
