After the Battle of Bentonsville March 19 -21 Lem was in a Hospital near Smithfield North Carolina when General Joe Johnston surrendered the Army of Tennessee in April 1865. Whether he was admitted to the hospital for smallpox or another disease is speculation. It is known he had ongoing health problems long after the war.
